Beringharjo Market (Pasar Beringharjo) is situated approximately 500 meters north of the Kraton, on the east side of the Cosmological Axis. Established by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono I, the market has been in continuous operation at this location. It was designated a national heritage site in 2011. According to Javanese urban planning principles, the Sultan is required to provide a market positioned to the northeast of the palace, reflecting the King’s role in ensuring the prosperity of his people. In Yogyakarta’s cosmological city layout, the market’s location also represents material temptation and the need for detachment to lead a virtuous life.
Originally, the market consisted of simple wooden shelters, but it was renovated in the early 20th century by the Sultanate, replacing them with a concrete structure featuring an Art Deco façade. Although the market’s physical appearance has evolved, its location and symbolic significance within the Cosmological Axis planning have remained unchanged. The market continues to serve its traditional role, offering a range of goods including local foods, textiles, and Batik Nitik (special Batik from the Kraton) and Lurik (woven cloth from the Kraton).
